I would like to hear your opinions on my essay that has just been put up on this website.
Any questions?
Comments?
Disagreements?

I'm thinking about turning this into a research paper but I'm not quite sure yet.

It can be found on the "Essays" page under Kevin Fox, The Extraordinary and the Dangerously Experimental Ordinary.

Thanks to the admins for putting it up so quickly!!

Two things

1.  I finished another paper (I think this one is much better than the first) and it is going through the editorial process right now.

2.  Does anyone know where I can find the original Russian text of Crime and Punishment online?  My small comprehension of the Russian alphabet is a little constraining in my search  Embarrassed

Thanks for the comments guys!

Dostoevsky is at:

I am taking Russian now, and it is a beautiful language.

It is called: Преступление и наказание

Thanks for your help Alyosha!  That was exactly what I was looking for  Grin

Unfortunately the Russian characters you posted appear as symbols, to me, but that is what copying into Notepad, saving as .html and opening with IE is for Wink

Again, thank you for your help!

"copying into Notepad, saving as .html and opening with IE" I did not know that. I learn something new every time I log in to this site.

Yeah, sorry about that. I suppose Cyrillic does not come through here.

This is the essential problem I have. That English speakers need to hear more from the prophet (Dostoevsky).

I submitted a second paper!  This one, in my opinion, is much better than the first one I wrote as it is an expansion of ideas I developed in the essay already on this website.
Instead of just Crime and Punishment I deal with The Brothers Karamazov and Chernyshevsky! (and briefly with Notes From Underground)

If/when this paper replaces/is added to this site please let me know what you think.  Grin

My second essay is up!
Let me know if you have any comments/critiques/questions...  I had a lot of fun writing this one  Cheesy

BTW: It can be found in the "essay" section of this website and it is labeled:
"Dostoevsky and the Conflicting Worldviews of Chernyshevsky and Christianity" by Kevin Fox

I'm thinking about re-writing this again... this time I'm going to add more Nietzsche as I think he compliments my conclusion and my ideas.  This paper will just never end  Undecided  but that's OK, I don't mind working on things that I enjoy.

Because I'm doing a re-write (maybe in a while  Cool) I would appreciate any suggestions for improvement!

Good work, at least I assume it is Wink . Your last one was excellent, and once I get the time to read this one, I expect it to be the same quality. Plus you had fun with it, and that's all that really counts, right?

Kevin, I just read your first essay and it is quite good indeed. I have a few points to make though. You say that, "The description of the extraordinary man given in this speech are Dostoevsky's, and they build the foundation for satirizing the characters that act out of role.", when in fact the essay about the great man theory is a real, factual document, which was submitted anonymously to one of the Russian magazines. Raskolnikov, in his speech to Porfiry, paraphrases it - if not quotes it! That is where Dostoevsky got the idea for it, as for all his other novels, from the newspaper! This might be worth mentioning somewhere.

Another thing that I would include in the essay is the horse dream, where Dostoevsky “squishes” the great man theory to the extremes! In it, he shows that a simpleton -  a stupid, uneducated peasant, could be the so called “great man” as well. He felt like killing his horse so he did – this is a great blow to the theory.

It would be beneficial for you to pick up a copy of “The Notebooks on Crime and Punishment”…unfortunately it is no longer in print, but you could find copies of it online or at used book stores  - I recently picked up a copy for 5 bucks! It has been edited and translated by Edward Wasiolek, a professor at the Univesity of Chicago. Wasiolek is a great Dostoevsky scholar, and I had the privilege of attending a few of his seminars.

I'm looking forward to the next essay..probably tomorrow

Wow! Really?  I had never heard that before.
Where did you find this out?  Was it in “The Notebooks on Crime and Punishment?”  Please let me know where you got this info so I can find it myself!
That would definetely be something important to point out for the sake of my paper.  As for considering the dream I think that is also a great point, altough it might be overkill considering the direction I take in my second essay... but maybe not!  I'll have to re-read it.
Thank you for your comments, I look forward to your opinions on my revised essay. Grin
