i have just started reading oblomov. I am at the point where 5 characters have visited him and his best friend is mentioned.

I must say the character that most interests me is the extremely passive and extremely inconspicuous alexyev.

he seems to be that way only to make the aristocrat feel superior and make it easier for himself to leech off them.

although tarantyev is cunning and learnt i suspect as the book progresses he will seem to diminish.

Also, someone gave the link to the site, where you can order Russian movies. If i will find it,i will post it here. There is a Russian movie based on the novel called "A few days from the life of Ilya Ilyich Oblomov".It is very good, but the image of Oblomov is more romanticised there,so i suggest you read the novel first and then try to watch the film.It is a very good one

Ivan Goncharov is one of my favorite russian novelists, it#s a pity his works got such an undeserved negative critic during his time. He was called a "reactionary".  Goncharov published only three novels but they are real masterpieces.
His "Oblomov" (1859), "Obyknovennaia istoriia" (in English A Common Story)  (1847) and "Obryv" (in English The Precipice) (1869) are wonderful, written with wit, satire and humour. He portrays all his characters with such a sympathy.

Sometimes I think this should be the Oblomov forum, given the energetic
nature of discussion (This is where I'd insert an 'only joking' emoticon,
except I can't stand them). Has anyone seen, read, bought, shoplifted a
book called THE KGB'S LITERARY ARCHIVE by Vitaly Shentalinsky which
opens the very sobering and often heart breaking files that detail for
the first time the fate of Isaac Babel, Mikhail Bulgakov,Osip Mandelstam,
A very depressing account of Maxim Gorky ( too popular to throw into
prison too conciencious to be allowed real freedom).
