For lack of anything better to do right now, I think I'll start a thread to discuss Gogol. To begin, has anyone here read The Nose?

I read the Nose a long time ago. I don't remember much about it, but I think it was good.

"Dead Souls" is almost perfect.

It was about a nose that dresses up as a general. It's hilarious.

Oh, yeah, and the nose is actually accepted by people as a person.

Oh, and the nose actually has a conversation with the man whose face he came off of.

From what you guys have said, this story reminds me of Kafka's 'Metamorphosis' where the main character wakes up as a beetle and they are scared of him but accept his transormation as just another change.  Kafka's other works are WEIRD.

Yeah, but in The Nose, the guy stays the same, with the exception that his nose is missing. But yeah, I can see the connection.

Gogol was quite a nut, i think.  Eccentric, strange, unique, man.  I haven't read anything of him .. but hope to, in the future.

I've heard of The Nose, and I'd love to read it, but my library is decidedly subpar.  Angry Not only does it lack The Nose, it lacks almost everything else Gogol. Does anybody know where I might find the e-text?
