Akira Kurosawa 's Red Beard,A masterpiece .

Kurosawa interpreted Dostoevsky style very well.while watching this film,I strongly felt I was reading D's works.
but I don't know which book Kurosawa borrowed from.anyone has a clue?

Toshirô Mifune,a great actor too,and acording to the review, this movie is quite a point in both Toshirô Mifune and Kurosawa's careers.

Dostoevsky was probably Kurosawa's biggest influence. There is a little D in almost all of his movies. "Red Beard" is s movie that reflects one of D's short stories to a t...some scenes are exactly like D has written them.

Insulted and the Injured

I made a thread about the same topic a long time ago here.

BTW, Kurosawa is by far my favorite director.

Just saw another one inspired by <C&P>

It's  Robert Bresson's  Pickpocket!

Its simple style interpretes C&P well.better than The Machinist!

wow, I need to see that one - I really like that actor.

I saw "high art" the other night - it was just okay, nothing special.

Maybe everyone knows of this movie and maybe no one does, but I just saw Hitchcock's "Rope", starring Jimmy Stewart, for the first time.  This film is highly influenced by "Crime and Punishment" (In fact one of the characters drops the phrase Crime and Punishment - I believe as a hint to viewers of that book's importance as a source for the film).

The theme of the extraordinary vs the ordinary men and the right to murder is made explicit in the film.  "Rope" is much narrower than C&P in that it deals solely with this theme and does not have the nuance of C&P (As is to be expected for an hour-and-a-half film), but I think that anyone who enjoyed reading C&P would enjoy watching Rope.

I apologize if everyone already knows this and I'm late to the party, as Rope is a pretty popular movie without my recommendation.

Return of The Idiot
Director/Réalisateur: Sasa Gedeon 2000, 104 minutes.

Inspired by Dostoevsky’s novel, The Idiot, this brilliant film concerns Frantisek, a man returning to the ‘real world’ from an asylum. Until now he’s been insulated from the complexity of adult relationships. He is an innocent and pure person. Soon, however, Frantisek becomes involved in various relationships, loving and otherwise. English subtitles.

Return of the Idiot
This Czech film will be showing in Ottawa, Ontario tonight (Saturday, November 19th).

'The Machinist' with Christian Bale is fairly heavily influenced by the general tone of many of Dostoevsky's works.  Bale's insomniac regularly reads 'The Idiot' throughout the film.  It's good, too.
