Why do you think that Raskolnikov wasn't very bothered by the fact that someone tried to commit suicide right in front of him, but he was extremely bothered when Marmeladov was run over by horses?

I think that has to do with his whole split personalities.  He can be unmoved by one thing one minute and then the next minute he's giving all his money to help someone else.

he also seems to have  a concern for that family in general, the next day when the daughter visited him, he really cared for her.
his split personality is an especially large factor in these scenes though.

another thought that i had about the suicidal woman and raskolnikov's friend getting run over, is that he is surrounded by tragedy. throughout the book.  i'm sure t he is really emotionally broken down, russia's gov. is corrupt, and dostoevsky shows signs of chaos in raskolnikov's everyday life.

This could possibly be a part of his split-personality.
Maybe?

i think that is because Raskolnkov was close to Marmledov! he thought of of his as a freind, so of couse he would morn and be sad for a freind, but a random suicide does not impact him as much becaus he didnt know the person, and i think Raskolinkov doesnt care in general about things he doesnt know or love...

I think that you are all correct.  It is more evidence of his split personality, but I agree with Myles that he can completely disconnect himself emotionally from people (nihilism?)
Part of his slit personality is his ability to be completely altruistic one minute and then completely self absorbed the next.
