In one of the classes I'm taking next quarter we'll be reading Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita.  I was wondering if anyone here has read anything by Bulgakov so I could get a feel of what I'm in for.

This is a scary coincidence: I just got The Master and Margarita like 2 days ago from my English teacher. I'm only on like page 4, but I already love it. Be prepared for some psycological humor in the first few pages, but other than that, I'm just as curious as you are.

We're also reading The Heart Of a Dog.

Back to the first point:
I hate how they translate Margarite's name into Margarita... I know that is how it is pronounced in Russian but still.... the name is Margarite!  Margarita makes it sound like a Latin American story, which I'm guessing it is not!

I will read that one after I finish Anna Karenina. I hope you are reading the Pevear/Volokhnonsky translation, who I now love. Their translation of the Adolescent was great.

Constance Garnett is now a second in my opinion (although she it great too).

Unfortunately the translation I have of The Master and Margarita is by Michael Glenny  Sad

Have you ever read anything that he translated before?

I merged this topic and Amy's other master and margarita quote topic because they are so very similar.

I don't know if it is too late, but you can find Bulgakov in English and in Russian at:

http://lib.ru/BULGAKOW/

Maybe if you join you can tell us a little about Iceland? This is another interest of mine and probably others. I love Bjork, Sigur Ros, and the Sagas.
