Am glad to see that you all have respect for Mr. Turgenev. I love the man very much, anything by him is masterpiece. Is terrible history has portrayed him as villian. I think he was as misunderstood as Nietzsche. He was trying to warn of impending doom...

You have made a pertinent point there. Dostoevsky is a great master of characterization and dramatic plots. But Turgenev,renowned as the novelist's novelist,has some subtle and rare skills like the ability to create an aura or a special atmosphere that pervades his work. I wonder if you have read "Mumu", a short story by Turgenev,  a real masterpiece and a telling social statement without any of the conventional social rigmaroles or religious qagmires.I found that this is a very special achievement and his mastery of the short form of fiction deserves better critical notice.
