Hi Foxhead, a great idea for a thread!

The painting above is by one of my favourite 19th century Russian artist, Ilya Repin.
It's called 'They Did Not Expect Him' and depicts the dramatic and unexpected return from exile of a revolutionary - I love the way Repin has filled his painting with light and yet still managed to shadow the principal character in the composition.

Keep posting.

I'm pretty obsessed with this drawing. It's by Daniel Martin Diaz and it means Schizophrenia in Latin.

"The Yellow House"

by Vincent Van Gogh

The yellow house of Van Gogh was the home of his dream.  He dreamt of a community of artists living there in peace.. the first to move into it with him, was Paul Gauguin ...

My favorite painting. I wish I was friends with this guy. On the other hand, I get to see him everyday on my desktop.  Smiley

That last one is really cool Worm.

Below is a couple of pictures from my favorite painter (who happens to by Russian) - Ivan Shishkin. His work is unbelievably realistic and I have never seen anyone depict and reproduce sun light like he does, both in oil and pencil. If you don't look closely his painting look like still shots. Too bad not many people know about Shishkin and his works - I suspect its because his paintings don't have "hidden messages" or special symbolism - they are "simply" beautiful.

My grandfather also paints, and he loves reproducing Shishkin's works. I have a full size reproduction of the below winter scene as well as the three bears. Too bad I can't take a pic of that for comparison, as the painting are back in Chicago Sad

I can't find any of his pencil work online - maybe I'll scan some in from a book I have...they are really worth seeing.

Fascinating pictures; it's surprising how realistic a piece of art can portray reality .. and thus, how far art can really go ... i believe it can go very far.
Gottfried Helnwein, an international painter, is also an expert at it.

It's indeed fascinating to see how he has painted the sunlight, and esp. how some shadows are a bit crooked and bent .. and perhaps a bit different from how they would be in reality.
PS: it's Foxhead, not Worm.  The name has changed.

One os my favorite Russian painters is Isaac levitan.he was a close friend of Chekhov. The interesting thing about his paintings is that he made them up.For example the landscape of the painting below was taken from one place and the church was added from another
