Difficult, yes! But nevertheless I would have to pick the Electronic Light Orchestra! I like what french band Air is doing too and Sigur Ros is like dawn in mountains at spring time...mmm

Sigur Ros is very good, but I'm probably going to have to say the Pixies, with Rasputina and the Cure tying for second.

I love all those bands "weave a wicker chair in the loonie bin".

My favorite band is Black Sabbath though.

ELO - That's a blast from the past! Love that ship in concert.
I have read FD to old Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark and Floyd and that's pretty cool. But I'd have to say pre-Joshua Tree U2 and pre-Signals Rush pretty much top my list.

Cool, permanent waves was sweet as sugar.

But dare I ask why not post signals?

You did not like Grace under Pressure?

Or moving pictures? Wait moving pictures was before signals..

poor knight, how you like Syd Barret? And you must all listen to the Kinks and Zombies.

Pink Floyd is amazing, but I don't like as much without Roger Waters.

UWM - You know I'm sure there are those points in your life when you seem to cross a threshold and things that come after seem out of touch with you and those that come before seem nostalgic. Early to mid 80's was my threshold. There are definitely some great U2 and Rush songs afterward, but their just not as imprinted on my soul.

PCP - I agree about Roger. It's really nothing much without him. I think Syd left too early, before their stuff really got complicated in an amazing way.

My favorite band of all time has got to be Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler is a genius. Then i think the Jeff Healey Band comes next, I'm a big fan of the electric-rock blues, I like all the big names too, but the lesser known ones are even better.

It's true that, from a theoretical standpoint, rock music isn't very interesting -- three chords and, on a good day, a solo or a key change. But sometimes the raw power of the good stuff can really get to you.

There are many great bands, but I guess The Beatles, The Police and maybe Rush, too, are my number one favorites.

Preamble: The Beatles were never just a rock (or, to be precise, pop) band, they were a world wide social phenomenon, and arguably the most influential artists in the whole 20th century.

Once this is established, I associate myself with Point concerning the Kinks -possibly the most radically undervaluated group othe the Golden Sixties- and Pink Floyd, that is until Roger was around. Syd Barret was only there for the first abum and one song on the second -the eerie "Jugband Blues"- and after the Waters flowed they seemed to veer off almost into self parody.

(On the other hand, I thought ELO were crap at the time, and "Last Train to London" is still a solid candidate for the Crappiest Pseudo-Disco Single Ever award, plus in recent times Jeff Lyne managed to rubbish even the Lennon-from-the-grave hit single "Free As A Bird", which in my book constitutes an unforgivable sin)

Other talented bands in serious need of some critical re-evaluation (and some some air time on your Cd players, probably): Urban Dance Squad -invented crossover ten years in advance, plus they were Dutch-, One Dove - Dot Allison: I love you!-, Big Audio Dynamite -proving that the Clash were not just the late Joe Strummer-, Black Grape -only two albums, but those were the best Stones albums Mick'n'Keef forgot to make in the Nineties-, Anthrax -considered useless Wop bimbos at the time, clearly geniuses in retrospect-, Dr Feelgood -without whom punk rock would not be have been conceivable-, and Ozomatli, amazing post chicano funk band, who are good on record and amazing live.

As a general aesthetic rule, I guess you could say that white American rock bands suck. But with two notable exceptions: Creedence Clearwater Revival -best US group of the Sixties, plus they invented "americana" 30 years before the Brits dreamed up the genre - and The Ramones, arguably the most influential US  rock band ever.

    "Dee you emm bee
    ev'ryone's accusing me!"

PS Almost forgot: Public Image Limited: even better the Pistols (and that is something)!

Now if you want to talk real tunes that last moons, forget rock bands and let's discuss black music....
