Bob Dylan is the single greatest artist of all time.  As for a "rock n roll" band I would say Metallica.

ooooo Bob Dylan is definitely a great..... as is Neil Young
but as far as rock goes i would have to say the vastly underrated King Crimson  Grin  but they  turned crap after their album Red....very progressive for the time!!!

The Grateful Dead was the greatest American band yet...they've got so much going on at once, with they're innovative rhythm guitar---the bass, lead guitar and drums all playing in different time signatures---and the keyboard keeping rhythm with a steady array of discreet notes.....Jerry's leads are excellent and they toured practically non-stop for 30 years, and they let people plug right into the soundboard and record the shows for free distribution...what bands do that these days...now they're all just trying to capitalize on the uninspired drivel that they call music

There are so many cool musical tastes here. I'd like to echo the aforementioned name, Dylan, as one of my favorite artists and add one also, Cousteau.

My favorite bands are the ones that stretch, parody, deconstruct, and destroy what rock music is and what it can be: Frank Zappa, the Residents, Boredoms, Sonic Youth, Captain Beefheart, Can, Big Black, etc.

That said, I also like some psychedelic rock of the '60s (Jefferson Airplane, Love, 13th Floor Elevators), some avant-metal like Boris, and prog, like Yes and King Crimson.

If I have to choose a rock band, I'd have to say Social Distortion. However, in general I prefer gypsy music like on Tony Gatlif films or else classical music like Schubert (my favourite).

Alice in Chains.  I think old FD himself would enjoy their music. Cool

I like many rock/metal bands, but I would say the one that has held my interest and respect the longest is Metallica. I've been recently very enamoured with As I Lay Dying as well. There is certainly a long list of deserving candidates, though.
