agreed...
however, the main character of the book is levin - and not anna.
anna is only a ''catalyst'' for the main plot of the book.
imo.

She certainly appeared to be a vile, wicked slut for most of the book.  But Tolstoy then showed us her perspective, that she really was living in a hell and was human.  I found myself wishing her husband would grant the divorce, so she and her lover could marry and get on with their lives.  Before Tostoy had made that shift, all of my sympathies were with her long-suffering husband.

the line of relations between vronsky - anna - anna's husband serves only for creation of a background for levin's quest of the meaning of life.

though, anna is a bitch alright.
