I was just wondering if anybody plays any musical instruments.  I play harmonica pretty proficiently, and also play a bit of guitar and Djembe.

Also what genre of music are you primarily listening to right now...I've been on a BlueGrass kick for the past few months

Wow,those are great instruments. You must be quite a musician Smiley
I used to play piano but then with all the schoolwork I had to leave it.
And I am currently listening to songs by Within Temptation and Trading Yesterday

I can only strum a few chords on guitar, and play basic rhythm on djembe, but harmonica is my main focus--I've been playing it every day for about two years...3 more years and I'll be ready to play with any band, in any key

piano is an excellent instrument.  I used it to help teach myself music theory, although I wish I could actually play the instrument...maybe someday I'll get a keyboard, but I want to master the harmonica before I move on to another instrument......

What sort of music do those bands play...I haven't really been paying any attention to the "new music" scene in the past several years...been stuck in a time warp, listening to 50's-60's bluegrass/country, 30's-60's blues, and 60's-70's rock

Well, within temptation is a mix between evanescence and nightwish ( if you know these bands). The vocals is done by a girl with crystall-clear voice and the music tends to rock. You can check out their video on youtube.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=PvM0kn-Q_7M

This is a link to their song 'memories'-my favorite

Lerik,

that video clip was mesmerizing. I really love that sort of music -- I don't know how one would refer to it. Sort of a deeply melancholy/gothic sort of rock maybe. I looked at a few other clips, too. I don't know if you know Leigh Nash, formerly of Sixpence None the Richer. She has a slightly higher pitched voice but also sings some beautiful songs, many Christian. Or Charlotte Gainsburg.

I finally got a chance to listen to that....it's not really the sort of stuff I generally listen to, but what a voice on that girl...quality music

have you ever listened to Rilo Kiley...they've got a female vocalist (Jenny Lewis) and are pretty excellent.....my favorite album by them is 'The Execution of All Things'

Nice....what are your band's major influences....I'm looking to get a rockabilly band going, once my buddy moves out here to Phoenix from my native NY

Lerik,

I'm not an expert on the YouTube, but most of the videos appear either to be covers of Sixpence's more pop like songs or a video of Leigh Nash's "Ocean Size Love" which actually isn't my favorite. Search on Liegh Nash or Sixpence Non the Richer.

But try this from Nina Gordon, formerly with Veruca Salt - http://youtube.com/watch?v=BiNf6uDhMac
It is one of my favorite songs and always makes me think of Nastasia Filipovna for some reason.

Or, from Charlotte Gainsbourg - http://youtube.com/watch?v=SAMinYXnrS4
http://youtube.com/watch?v=JKPXPJryp3g
They're a little "breathy" but full of passion.

Scoundrel, I saw the videos, really liked the second one.I haven't heard of this band but seems like its been around for quite a while.

Poor Knight,I heard that song by Nina Gordon in the Chocolat trailer and I really liked it.Plus, somebody made a video, where he combined the clips from the movie Notebook and this song. Its really nice. Here's the link

Sorry about the audio quality on that first link...I was at work when I posted and couldn't actually listen to it.....another female vocalist I can dig is Regina Spector...I don't know if you've heard of her, but:

nice....the flute is a pretty bad ass instrument.....The Marshall Tucker Band had a pretty good fluteplayer, not sure what his name was though('Can't you see' is a good example of their flute work)
I purchased a "bamboo saxaphone" from this guy at an art festival a couple months ago (I haven't put the time in to really get good at it yet), but you play it sort of like a penny whistle....the guy I bought it from also was selling bamboo flutes...here's his website, check it out:

Eriktheflutemaker.com

I just got a new house in downtown Phoenix(signed the lease today), and the previous tenant left a Piano, so i get to keep it...Now I'll get a chance to give it a go on the piano Grin

as for hiphop butterfly, I haven't really been able to get into that genre .....although I do like Snoop Dog's first album and a few tracks by dr. dre....also biggie smalls was pretty good
