I just saw this movie again. It is directed by Roman Polansky and stars Johnny Depp - but it was not really popular when it came out.

I actually thought it was a great movie...I really liked the story and Depp is always a great actor to watch. Of course, like in any Polanski movie, it is all ultimately about sex - just kidding, but it is...sort-of.  Smiley

This is the basic plot:
Dean Corso [Depp] is a rare-book dealer who is hired to locate and compare three copies of a demonic manuscript "The Nine Gates of the Shadow Kingdom", that can summon the devil. This trips takes him from New York to Portugal and all over France, where he is accompanied by a devil incarnate who just happens to be a beautiful, mysterious woman [Emanuelle Seigner]. I don't want to give away what happens, as you guys should really see it....I think Dostoevsky fans will enjoy it...

Yes this is a great movie. This was kind of how I became interested in the Gothic style book illustrations. This was a very overlooked movie.

I just bought the book that the movie came from. It's "The Club Dumas" by Arturo Perez Reverte. I'm really looking forward to reading it. I'd like to see the movie, too, though I can't figure out why they changed the name from the book. "The Club Dumas"... It has just the right ring of mystery, with a little "I don't really speak English" charm.
