Crime and Punishment was gripping and the Idiot was good, but The Brothers Karamazov was a masterwork. No questions asked. I second an obscure character from Slaughterhouse Five in saying that everything that man needs to know is in The Brothers Karamazov

The major works are in the following order for me:

1) The Brothers Karamazov
2) Crime and Punishment
3) The Adolescent/A Raw Youth
4) Notes from the Underground
5) The Possessed
6) The Idiot

Favorite Dostoevski work has always been Brothers Karamazov, but once I reread The Posessed I had to give that one hell of a book the crown. I got more out of the second time and just basically just enjoyed reading it again. Maybe if I read it a third time I'll finally go insane myself.

The Idiot has to be my favourite work of Dostoyevsky's... I could read it over and over and never get tired of it... It is and absolutely amazing story.. Hippolyte's confession, Muishkin's multitude of what you could call frantic confessions, outpourings of his idiotic (due to sincerity and openness) soul, and the scene with Rogojin and Nastasia's death, amazing.. Stroking Rogojin's head in the complete idiocy and destitution of being overwhelmed by society, doesn't everyone who really understands this book, feel that same way at times, feel utterly distraught and overwhelmed by the world's indifference and cruelty... This book is fabulous. C&P is next and TBK is third though the two short works, dream of a ridiculous man, and notes from the underground are also fantastic, the best starting lines of any works...

the bros karamazov is probably the most important book i have ever read.

i dont know what switches got rearranged - however, it was clear then that a single human intellect was capable of scope i had never previously thought possible.

The Brothers Karamazov is hands down his greatest novel.  It has the best elements of his other works, and is simply an amalgamation of those elements which in turn creates a new and brilliant entity unto itself.  Ivan is the greatest character in all of literature, and the themes of religion, God, pain, etc. are relevant to anyone from any epoch.

I haven't read 'The Brothers Karamazov' or 'The Demons', but everything else on the list I've read. I voted for 'Crime and Punishment' because of how it places you right their in Peterburg, and the absolutness of the work as far as ability to absorb you. It has left the greatest impression on me and a high expectations for all future novels I read. I think I'm going to tackle 'The Demons' before 'The Brothers Karamazov', the icying on the cake!

To qualify my vote I must state that i've only read Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov.  The Idiot is next on my list.

So, I voted for Crime and Punishment because I think it's the better written of the two novels even though I have more of a connection to the Karamazovs because of their relationship with their father and their sensuality.

Raskolnikov, for me, has to be the most mystifying but yet still intriguing literary character.  Nobody else could be so engaging while lying on a couch lost in his head for half a novel!

Notes from the Underground by far...I read it at the height of my depression and discovered some deep insights about myself...self-loathing is a cancer in me just like it was for the narrator in this fine work.

Hi everyone,

By far the Idiot is my most favourite book (though all of Dostoevsky's works are brilliant)!  Prince Myshkin is the most beautiful character ever to have been written.

I voted for Crime and Punishment, but I must say I hold a special place for Demons as that was my first Dostoevsky novel, and the reason I someow find myself in this forum.

Now that's rare.  You don't see too many people read Demons for their first taste of Dostoevsky!
