Voted for Crime and Punishment.

The Idiot was amazing - completely chaotic but incredibly relevant to the modern man! However I'd have to say that Crime and Punishment was THE masterpiece written by FD. I have reccommended that book to way too many people - read it two years ago and it still affects me today!
Really liked the Devils - that was messed up, but talk about food for thought!

p.s. dostoyevsky pales in comparison to Tolstoy

I've gone for Demons a) because it's the first D novel I ever read, and b) I read it again 20 yrs later, worked out how he put it together, and thought it was even more brilliant than before.

I've only read C and P, TBK, Notes from the Underground, and the Dream of the Ridiculous Man so far, but I still like Crime and Punishment the best.

Maybe i'm biased as it's the first Dostoevsky I have read. who knows? Brothers Karamazov is great too, nearly done.

Hi Anfim, I think the reason for TBK's '1st place status' among most Dost fans is the fact that it has a lot of meat.  It makes you think quite deeply.  Crime and Punishment might have better entertainment value (hence it's worldwide success among readers) but it doesn't have the meat of TBK.  Just my thoughts...

Exactly, my sentiments too, TBK is #1 in my book! ha ha ha (sorry about the pun) lol. I was actually surprised that C&P wasn't winning the poll.

Oh and i just wanted to say: nice forum guys, it's cool to find a few like minded people who have something to say. Thanks!

Fav dostoyevsky work is veeeery tough. Having read crime and punishment and TBK I was disappointed to receive the Idiot as a birthday present. How naive I was! Like all the greatest authors Dostoyevsky has the skill of all his books being a completely different experience so that makes choosing a favourite an impossibility. However I choose Tbk simply because the scale and size of the work is fenomal. A remarkable literary achievement.

I voted for The Brothers because of the impact it had on my life.  I read Crime and Punishment the summer after my last year in high school, and followed it up with Notes, The Idiot, and The Brothers over the next few summers.  I have since read the Gambler, Double, White Nights and Dream of a Ridiculous Man, and am currently reading Demons.  While Dostoevsky's enthralling stories grasped my interest in all of these books, it is his unflinching honesty that has kept me reading.  I voted for the Brothers because it has haunted me ever since I read it last summer, and has resonated with me personally more than any of his other works.  Seeing myself in each of the brothers, and particularly relating the most to Ivan while wishing to be like Alyosha was the most powerful aspects of the book for me personally.  Dostoevsky does not shy away from the difficult questions in life that we all seek answers to, and he doesn't gloss over the darker side of reality either (I can't imagine finding characters like Fyodor Karamazov, Stavrogin, or even Ivan K in other Western literature in the nineteenth century).  Crime and Punishment was amazing too, and would come in second for me, but the Brother's has caused me to look the deepest within my own soul, and I’m still trying to sort things out.

For me, The Gambler is the best of Dostoevskys works.  Ok, so it's probably only a novella, but it highlighted a serious change in his writing style.  It was the book that led to Crime and Punishment, and in my view the best from a psychological standpoint (probably with the exception of Crime and Punishment).  It was written from the heart and deserves more respect than is given.

Hi everyone I just discovered this site today. Anyone here from the old Dostoevsky Yahoo site that was closed down a few years back?

I've been posting on the Russlit yahoo site since then with a few other FMD afficianados, but some folks keep bringing in distracting irrelevant stuff like Tolstoy and Turgenev! It's not as trafficked as this site from the stats. But it's interesting that about 80% of the posts there seem to be FMD related.

My favourite FMD? My top 3 are Brothers K, C&P and The Idiot. Had a hard time choosing between TBK and CP - TBK is deeper, but CP is more riveting but in the end I went with my first love, CP.

My favourite short work? I would go with A Nasty Story, the funniest short piece I have ever read.
