I could only include 8 choices so if your favorite work isn't listed, choose 'Other' and list your favorite below in the form of a reply.  I'm going to have to go with TBK.

I might just do that.  How long is The Double?  I was going to read some C.S. Lewis and maybe Tolstoy's Anna Karenina after I finish Demons (which is turning out to become another gem).

Well, I don't know what you've read of Dostoevsky so far, but I'd highly recommend Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, and definitely some of the shorter works: The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, White Nights, and Notes From Underground.

I've read each of these works two or three times - I absolutely loved them.

I think I'll start a thread on The Double in the Minor Works forum. I am just itching to discuss it with someone. Smiley

I vote for The Idiot.  I'm not done it yet but by far a literary masterpiece.  Next up is TBK though so that may be #1 still.

To the Forum-

I have honestly been working on "The Possessed," or "Demons" (as it is here known), for over nine months.  Longer than it takes to make children.  So I voted for "The Possessed" as being my favorite because one night in December I realized, almost in a flash, that I had been reading the work for seven months and could not describe what the novel was about.  Believe me, I had a huge laugh over it.  Literally, I have traveled a major part of Western Europe with the book in hand.  A truly amazing experience to read the words of the great Russian genius.  Hopefully the website will set up a chat room so we can go live with our discussions.  Also, thank you for such a great website.

Sincerely,
The Prince

I'm going to have to start a queue for all of the Dostoevsky works. Wink Anyone know where I should start?

Notes from the Underground is a good introduction to Dostoevsky's mature period.

I am reading the Adolescent right now, and it is great so far. I wonder why that one gets so little attention?

I have read some of the obscure ones too, like the Insulted and Injured, which is also good.

I'm just finishing up Demons and the last 150 pages or so was riveting!  Some of the book dragged a little bit but that was most likely due to my lack of understanding in 19th century Russian politics.  I was glued, though, the last few hundred pages.

Great read!  I might put this one above The Idiot.
