So far I've read Notes From Underground, Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov...  Out of those three I like the Bros K the best.

I'll start reading another of his major works (well, anything) in a week or so, does anyone have any suggestions?
I have Demons, The Adolescent and The Idiot all in my library... along with some short stories ->The Double, White Nights, Meek One, The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, The Honest Thief, The Christmas Tree and a Wedding, The Peasant Marey, and A Gentle Creature.

I thoroughly enjoyed White Nights and The Dream of a Ridiculous Man.  Excellent, excellent short stories.

If you want a long one that requires some intellectual grasping - try Demons.

From what I've read, which is not much, The Idiot was my favorite.

I agree. The Idiot is perfect. The others can be good, but you must be ready for them.

I remember when I first read Crime and Punishment, I couldn't stand it during the murder section. I put that one down for a while.

Dostoevsky deals with difficult subjects that you are better after thinking about.

BTW, the Adolescent was great!

Dostoevsky wrote too many great things! I'll never be able to find the time to read them all! I feel so depressed when I think about the possiblity of dying before I finish reading all of his works. Cry Shows how much I love the guy, I'm thinking about dying and I only turned 16 a week ago!

Dostoevsky is all about growing older and wiser. This is what I enjoy most. Maybe the symbolism of adolescence is good, but really it is about how to create the best world today.

Don't you hate it when you don't know if you've already read a book?

Crime and Punishment! How come no-ones raving about it? It's the best book I've ever read. I spent a summer reading it on the train to work in Liverpool every day. I spent all my working days thinking about what I had read on the way to work. It takes over your mind. Maybe i'm biased as it's the first Dostoevsky I have read. who knows? Brothers Karamazov is great too, nearly done.

Hi Anfim, I think the reason for TBK's '1st place status' among most Dost fans is the fact that it has a lot of meat.  It makes you think quite deeply.  Crime and Punishment might have better entertainment value (hence it's worldwide success among readers) but it doesn't have the meat of TBK.  Just my thoughts...

I thought C & P was his most famous work.

It is.  That doesn't mean it is automatically his best work, though...

Most of my favorite songs from bands/artists have never been on the radio.

Hurrah for Karamazov! How far are you into it? TBK was my intro to D and that might be why it holds a special place in my heart. The first time I read it, it just floored me-- the scope, mix of harshness and beauty, the food for thought... I had to go back for C & P.  Grin
