I just recived an English assignment where we have to pick an author, and write about the time period he wrote in, the different movements at the time (philisophical, political, etc.) , and themes relevant to these movements. Naturally, I picked Dostoevsky.

I'm currently in the planning stages of my paper, and I need resources. Most of them cannot be online, so I was wondering what books about Dostoevsky should be good for my assigned topic.

So far I am thinking of writing about nihilism, atheism, the beginings of the Communist society (radical thinkers like Ratikin from the Brothers Karamazov), and the Russian patriotism.

So anyone know of any books that might help?

Definitely check these out:
Terras.  The Young Dostoevsky.
Gleason. Young Russia : the genesis of Russian radicalism in the 1860s
Chernyshevksy. What is to Be Done?

Chernyshevsky was the poster boy for socialism, nihilism in mid 19C Russia.  And the rest provide excellent background.
Sounds like a fun writing assignment, I might be able to help you with some of the points in your paper if you find you need help.
Or maybe you could let us know how you are progressing in your paper and we could add our two cents here and there.

Good luck!

Well, I have an rediculously long time to complete it, so this thread will probably be long gone by then, but I will deffinetly post any updates.

Thanks for the book reccomendations, I'm going out to the store tonight, so I'll be able to pick them up immediately. And yeah, I absolutsly love this assignment. It seems very advanced for 9th grade. It's far beyond your average biography, thats for sure.

That's way too much money for books you don't even know if you can use!  If you have a public library somewhere nearby, give them a try first and see if you like the books!
Then buy them if you like 'em.  But go to the library first!
