I've been assigned to right a paper over the summer for my English class that compares Tess from Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Raskolnikov from C&P. Here's the kicker: the paper requires a comparison aound the question of whether or not the two are sociopaths. I would like to discuss in this forum whether or not you believe Raskolnikov is evil and what your reasons for saying so are.
I, for one, do not. The fact that Ras. shows guilt demonstrates that he is morally aware and is affected by his concience, and therefore is not evil. However, to say that Ras. cannot be termed evil is not to say that he is necessarily good either. In my paper, I plan to defend this position by analyzing the hegemonies that defin the term, evil, int he two novels.
Any advice or points of view?
