I'm very interested in reading Gogol. What would be a good book to start me off on him?

I would start with the short stories. Though "Dead Souls" is his magnum opus, I think everybody posting would agree that these stories are brilliant. You really don't get all of Gogal without reading them. My favorite is "The Diary of a Madman".

Thank you so very much!  Grin I do know that Dostoyevsky was a great admirer of Gogol's and I have read about the man's life... but I am always reading someone else's books. What are his stories like? Are they really dark?
