This question actually springs from me reading Memoirs From The House of the Dead, but since this is such a stupid question I put it in Off-Topic Discussions.

I'm not sure what parts of HotD are really autobiographical and which ones aren't, but I found the part about his relationship with the prison's dog pretty touching, and he never seemed to me like the kind of person that would like dogs all that much.  Anybody know if he ever had any outside of prison?  If so what kind(s)?
