What was the significance of the scene in Part II, Chapter VI, where the woman jumps off of the bridge?

Perhaps,
it reflected the hopelessness of the environment Raskolnikow lived in (=poverty).  People didn't know a way out, didn't want to live that way, and decided to end their lives..
