Recently (that is, yesterday) I read Kafka's "Metamorphosis." I found it interesting, and the atmosphere beautiful, but felt that the core ideas were difficult to find or comprehend. I have a few ideas floating around about it, but am having difficulty stringing them together coherently, even to explain them to myself.

Does anyone have any ideas or links that could aid me in understanding this story?

It is impossible to understand this man... I love him. Stories, which you can't understand, are my favorites. Sorry, this isn't a very helpfull commentary of me...

In some cases, this novell reminds me to Dostojewskijs "Double" (I do not know how the book is called in english. This story about Goljadkin, who meets another Goljadkin...).

After reading The Trial I have become a massive fan of Kafka.  I read The Metamorphosis a wee while ago and felt it was lacking in something I cant quite put my finger on.  I enjoyed his shorter stories In the Penal Colony, A Country Doctor and Report to an Academy more.

On my shelve is America and The Castle to be read which I think will be on the same level as The Trial.

Grin I love Kafka----"The Trial" really impressed the most---the author really drew me into the psychology of the novel ---it made me laugh and made me nervous and couldn't wait to see how it would end.   To my mind, that's what a novel should do to the reader.
If anyone has the time, a good break from Dostoevsky are the works of Victor Hugo---- i recommend him. Cheesy
