I just got done reading the Gambler, and I was left with a question. Did Alexei Ivanovich have sex with Polina and/or Madame Blanche? Dostoevsky was sort of vague in the scene where Polina appears in Alexei's room right before he goes to Paris. Did she just fall asleep there, or did they have sex? The same question arises with Madame Blanche.

Kind of an insignificant question in the grand scheme of things, but meh...

This isn't really to do with the question, rather an experiment I did on the reletive accuracy of translations of The Gambler. This is a difficult proposition considering I know no Russian, but some
20 years ago a very handsome of Russian Classics
came out from Progress publishers, Moscow. They were beautifully bound books with White dust jackets
but I wondered whether the Communist Literary Protectors would alter anything. I read the standard
Penguin (David Magarshach or Constance Garnett),
and found only one difference between the translations. A line in the penguin edition describes the
Frenchman (memory!) as oily and sycophantic when
desiring a favour and cold and arrogant to those of whom he has no need - in short, a typical Frenchman!
Racism is not good Soviet literature.
